Norman E. Thomas began his art career very early in life learning to play piano by ear at age 6. He played classical music to audiences in Los Angeles while learning to play the Hawaiian slide guitar his mom played during World War II. This ability in music neatly transcended and evolved into an interest in painting and glass art. He spent his first college days wanting to become a veterinarian or hand surgeon but after talking to a very wise councilor, he transfered to CSU, Fullerton where he obtained his B.A. degree in jewelry / metal and his M.A. degree in glass in 1978.

Mr. Thomas's first teaching opportunity came when the dean of art at Rancho Santiago College in Santa Ana, CA hired him to teach stained glass and develop and construct a hot shop for the art department. Norman wrote the curriculum and taught there until 1991.

Accepting another challenge, he moved to the north county of San Diego, built a number of glass studios for other artists and began to teach a variety of diciplines for Palomar College. Classes included Glass Blowing, Ceramics, Design / Composition, Design / Documentation and a new class called Art As Business. Norm taught there until 2001.

Upon moving to the northwest in 2002, Mr. Thomas began working in various studios and was then hired by Clark College, Vancouver, WA and Portland Community College to teach Art As Business and Drawing classes.

Currently Norm works at the Firehouse #12 in Vancouver, WA in a state of the art glass studio and continues to create mixed media and blown glass. Current commissions have included light sconces for the Crossroads Recording Studio in Vancouver and the lighting for the Tin Shed restaurant in Portland.

Mr. Thomas has been creating works of art for the past 38 years and is included in art collections of Rob Reiner, Batte Midler, Lou Farrigno and Leslie Caron. The Corning Museum of Glass, The International Exhibition of Glass, Kanazawa, Japan, the Clinton White House and First Lady Laura Bush has exhibited his art.

Since 1971 Norm has produced over 14,000 works of art in glass, drawing / painting and mixed media. The Fireborne Gallery is pleased to represent him and looks forward to his new work.

Artist's Statement

“Glass is hard edge, dangerous to play with, unforgiving with absolutely no discipline of its own and close to playing the piano and the slide guitar. It keeps me warm, interested, and has never let me down.”
