Linda Steider is a studio artist working primarily with kilnformed glass. Her twenty year background as a fiber artist, during which she garnered numerous awards, brings a unique perspective to the world of glass. Steider has also worked with soft pastels since high school, rendering paintings from her own photography.
Early influences include her upbringing in Toppenish, WA, near the Yakima Indian Reservation, and, after a family move to Glendale, CA, the aura of “Hollywood”. Although an unlikely combination, both Native American culture and the glitz and glitter of Hollywood leave their mark on her work. A summer in Europe at the tender age of seventeen sealed her desire to create art.
Steider's award winning work has been shown nationally and internationally.
Artist's
Statement
Rather than stating my intention for each piece,
I find it fascinating to let the viewers derive
their own meaning, based on their life experience.
This can sometimes be different from my intended
portrayal, but serves as a reminder of how we all
see the same circumstance in a different way.
I've overheard many interpretations of my work,
some close to my intent, some not.
Having tried many media, I am
fascinated by the
complexity and versatility of kiln-formed glass.
It can be smooth and shiny, heavily textured with
frits and powders, or a huge range between the two.
I tend to take risks and push the limits both my own
and those placed upon me by the confines of the medium.
My main emphasis with glass or any media is to simply
have fun and impart the joy I feel while working,
into each piece.
My current work is rich with color and loosely structured.
Working intuitively, each piece reveals itself to me as
it evolves. I begin with an idea, or image in mind, but
give myself the freedom to stray off the chosen path.
The content varies, depending on what has captured my
imagination at any point in time. Living in a forested
area, with a spectacular view of the gorge, I am amazed
and inspired constantly by my surroundings.
