After having spent more than twenty years working in stained glass, I was ready for a different path and became drawn to the art of glass fusing. Early in my glass fusing efforts I was introduced to the work of Roger Thomas, a Portland artist. His glass landscapes and abstracts appeared as though they were oil paintings, and I soon realized this was the direction I wanted to pursue. Over a period of four years I attended several of Roger’s classes continuing to feel excited about this new way for me to work with glass. Part of the class curriculum introduced me to the work of Miriam de Fiore, an Argentinean born artist who lives in Italy and produces amazing landscapes in glass. In 2005, I traveled to Venice and took an intensive two-week class with Miriam at the Abate Zanetti Glass School.
I feel my art reflects my love of nature and the beauty to be seen everywhere in our daily travels. The creation of flowers in glass is one challenge I repeatedly enjoy – many of my pieces reflect this. I can see the potential for a great glass landscape in the coast range with a nice sunset or the view of a tulip field in bloom, or a pastoral view in the countryside near Hillsboro which reminds me of Tuscany. Trying to translate this beauty into glass is challenging and yet a totally new and enjoyable journey for me.
I hold an active role with the Oregon Glass Guild, recently serving as state secretary. The past two years I have also been teaching fusing classes in my studio. Aside from my work as a glass artist, I spent 39 years working in the field of dental hygiene and am mother to two sons. I continue to enjoy my studio time and look forward to the next adventure glass will provide.
