Johnson, who signs his pieces ODJ, first fell in love with glass when he happened upon Bill and Sally Worcester's glass studio in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Johnson was so taken with glassblowing that he quit his job and moved to the beach to apprentice with the Worcesters in the early seventies. By 1987, Johnson had built his own studio in Gaston, Oregon where he still blows when he's not on the island.
Invited to work in 1996 as a studio assistant at Penland, the prestigious school of Arts and Crafts in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, Johnson worked with a number of world-renowned glass artists. A part-time resident of Maui, Johnson has worked and shown each year at Hot Island Glass in Makawoa since it opened in 1992. Inspired by patterns and shapes he finds in nature, his glass possesses an optic quality not found in thinner Italian style glass. After 30 years, his work shows that he is still having a lot of fun.
